Renting a Car or Scooter on Roatan

To get around a lot of the island, the bus and taxi system is very efficient and inexpensive.  However, it's worthwhile to rent a car for one or 2 days in order to go explore the far east side of the island, including the beautiful beach at Camp Bay, which has no development on it and is the perfect spot to spend several hours just relaxing and enjoying nature.   Other great stops along the way are Oakridge, a picturesque town with houses on stilts on the water, where you can do a boat tour through the mangroves, Punta Gorda, a Garifuna village (on Sunday afternoons, they do their traditional dancing and drumming), the monkey and sloth sanctuary in French Cay, just to name a few.   Car rentals can be booked online and picked up at the airport, but there's also a guy who rents out a few cars and brings them right to the hostel, at a rate of just $45/day, our SUV, a Ford Escape, is available for $60/24 hours, or $40 for a 4 hour rental.  Split 4 or 5 ways, it's a super cheap way to see everything!  If you're traveling on your own, no problem.  We can easily spread the word with other hostel guests that you'd like to share a rental car, and you'll have some new friends to adventure around the island with.  You'll need to have your driver's license from home (an international drivers license isn't required).  If you're renting at the airport, you'll also need a credit card (some of the car rental agencies put a $1000 freeze on the card as security deposit until the car is returned), but if you're renting through the guy that drops off at the hostel, you'll just need to have your rental payment in cash.

Prefer to venture around the island on scooter?  Scooter rentals can be dropped off/picked up at the hostel through a rental company, who charges $35/24 hours.
