Leaving Honduras
COVID note- restrictions and requirements regarding land border crossings continue to change, please check with the consulate for the country you'd like to travel to for the most current policies
Departure tax for international flights is a little over $40 per person. For plane tickets purchased after Nov 2014, the departure tax should be included in the fare (except for Spirit Airline flights, I think it's not yet included in these). If you're leaving the country by bus, there may be a small fee at the border.
Going to Belize? There is a direct flight between Roatan and Belize City through http://www.tropicair.com/ That's definitely the easiest way to go, and doesn't work out much more than paying for boats, buses, taxis and spending 2 days of travel.
The D-Express boat goes from Puerto Cortes to Placencia, Belize every Monday at 11, and comes back to Puerto Cortes, Honduras every Friday. The trip takes about 3 hours and costs $55 each way. Otherwise, you can on a bus from Puerto Cortes to the Guatemala Frontera...the bus attendant yells out "frontera, frontera!", walk 150 meters to the Honduras Migration office. Immediately after the Honduras Migration offices there are microbuses available to take you to Puerto Barrios. The bus stops 8k up the road at the Guatemalan Migration office and waits for all the passengers to get their passports stamped and then takes you directly to the city center or to the launcha. You have to take your boat ticket to the Guatemalan Migration office to get your exit stamp.
We loved Glovers' Reef Resort in Belize. They have a place on the Sittee River that their boat departs from every Sunday, and comes back on Saturdays (2 hour boat ride out). Very rustic, and incredibly beautiful. Camping, dorms, and cabins on the beach or over the water.
Going to Guatemala? Check about current shuttle options, just send us an email. Hedman Alas also offers bus service to Antigua and Guatemala City. If you're heading for the Rio Dulce, go to Omoa, crossing over to Puerto Barrios, where boats depart to Livingston. If you'd like to spend some time on the Rio Dulce, Hotelito Perdito is a great option. They can arrange a boat pick up from either Livingston or Rio Dulce for a fee. From Rio Dulce, you can take a shuttle up to Semuc Champey.
If you need a place to stay in Antigua, the Black Cat Hostel is a good option. We also stayed at a great apartment recently, https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/9573562 In Puerto Barrios, there's a no-frills hotel right next to the internet place that's inexpensive and has new mattresses.
Going to El Salvador? The King Quality bus offers a direct service from San Pedro Sula to San Salvador. King Quality also offers several other Central American destinations, including Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Guatemala TICA buslines also offers international destinations to the other countries of Central America. TACA Airlines has a direct flight from Roatan to El Salvador daily.
Going to Nicaragua? An overnight in Tegus or San Pedro Sula was always pretty much inevitable, with international buses departing for Managua in the morning, but now there are a couple direct shuttles to Leon offered through several companies: Guacamaya, Roney and Tornabe with a pick up from the La Ceiba ferry dock (we can assist you with the booking)
Have you traveled any of these routes recently and have an update for us? Please let us know, as information changes.
