With all the lush, green vegetation, it's inevitable that there must be rain sometime in Roatan. It's possible to get a shower any time during the year, but the months that rain comes most often is our rainy season of mid-October through to mid-January. For travelers who are only on the island for a few days, several days of rain can be a huge disappointment, but rainy season is beautiful and can be fun too.
What's there to do in the rain?
1. Curl up in bed or in a hammock with a good book. The soothing sound of the rain on a metal roof and the fresher temperature creates the perfect environment to have a bit of lazy time.
2. Go diving or snorkeling. Even if a storm front comes in and the west side is too rough, there's almost always a side to the island that's calm, so you can still get out and enjoy the beautiful reef (you might want to take an underwater light with you so you can appreciate the colours of the coral more on overcast days). You're going to be getting wet anyway, so why let a bit of rain stop you?
3. Put on your rain gear, and go splash in the puddles! If you aren't traveling with rain gear, then just go out and get drenched- sing in the rain, dance in the rain, let your inner child come out. The intensity of tropical showers is incredible.
4. Rent a car and tour the island. Usually there are clear breaks throughout the day, so a day of exploring is a good way to keep entertained. It might not be perfect for beach stops, but you can see some of the views on the drive, stop by Marble Hill farms to check out their jams and jellies, check out the houses on stilts in Oakridge.
5. Go for a bit of pampering. Sophiestication Beauty Salon on the 3rd floor of Plaza Mar in Coxen Hole has some really great pricing, so go get a pedicure or get your hair done.
6. Catch up on your travel blog, backing up your travel photos, and researching the next leg of your trip. Sometimes it's good to have a planning/organizing day.
7. Movie time! There are several movie vendors on the island that have some of the latest (pirated) releases. At the hostel, we have a projector so we can do group movie time (an outside movie might not be possible on a rainy day, but on the porch or up at our house is always an option).
8. Visit the Carambola Botanical Gardens. If it's not pouring, just cloudy and drizzling, a walk through the gardens can be a good way to pass a few hours.
9. Get to know other hostel guests. There are lots of board games at the hostel, so get comfy on the porch and enjoy a games day.
10. Visit a few indoor places. Most of the activities on Roatan are outdoors, but there are a few indoor options- check out the new chocolate place just across from the gas station by West End, go to the rum cake factory on the road to West Bay, or the cameo factory by Flowers Bay. Gumbalimba Park also has some indoor sections, like the insectarium and pirate cave.
Don't let the rain get you down- there's still lots of ways to enjoy our beautiful island!
