No Walmart on Roatan

The hostel is often a landing pad for people moving to the island of Roatan.  It's a cheap place to settle in for a week or two while checking out long-term rentals, so I often am asked many questions about life on the island, where to get things, etc.  One thing that has come up several times over the last few years is guests being sure that there's a Walmart on the island.  Nope, there is no Walmart on the island.  'But I saw it on the internet, on a youtube video!'.  Ah, yes, the famous you tube video of T.J. Lynch, a former resident and realtor who made many, many informative little video clips on a huge variety of subjects about life on Roatan.  If you go back to the video and check the date, you'll see that it was done on April 1st, otherwise known as April Fool's Day.  Yes, this was TJ's idea of an April Fool's Day prank, and many years later, it's still fooling people.

So what do we have on the island?  For housewares such as towels, shower curtains, kitchenware, you can find most of what you need at Eldon's Supermarket (there are 2 of these, one in Coxen Hole, and one in French Harbour).  Finding a decent can opener can be difficult, I'd suggest bringing one along.  For clothing, Carrion is a small department store, with a location in Coxen Hole, and another at Megaplaza, and there are many second hand clothing stores, as well as a few small new clothing stores as well.  Sometimes the hardware stores such as Serranos, Cofesa and Puerto Cortes Express have items you might be interested in as well, like lamps, fans, some bathroom stuff (like towel rods, etc).

We don't have any large restaurant chains.  Wendy's and Applebee's were both here briefly and both shut down.  We have 2 smaller franchises, Bojangles Fried Chicken, and Pizza Inn, which both have locations in Coxen Hole and French Harbour, and have dine-in, take-out and delivery.

Have any other questions about what's on Roatan?  Send me a message, I'd be glad to help out  roatanhostel@gmail.com

Hi, I wished my husband would have found your page before we got here. You seem to have answers to many questions I have. Thank you for your time in helping others. We were looking to maybe move here but showing up and not knowing what and where to go has left me a bit frustrated (with hime mostly, lol)
I will check out your page further. Thanks again.

Is there a shop near the port in Roatan that has contacts?
