Volunteering in Roatan

Planning to spend a bit of time on Roatan, and want to find out ways that you can help out?  There are plenty of great non-profits on the island, worthy of offering your time or a donation.  Sandy Bay is a perfect base if you're coming here to do volunteer work, as there are several options very close to the hostel.
If you have a medical background, Clinica Esperanza is wonderful non-profit health-care clinic (dental services offered too), that's just a 2 min walk from the hostel.  If you are a medical professional, there's no cost to volunteer with them, and there's not a minimum length of time.  The clinic is open Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm, operating like a walk-in clinic, and has a paediatrician and women's health doctor on staff as well.  If you're in school in the medical field, volunteering at the clinic is a great way to get practical experience and learn more about tropical medicine.  Student volunteers have a fee for their program that helps to sustain the clinic.  The student volunteer program includes a medical Spanish component.
If you like working with kids, Care4Communities is a good choice, offering English classes as well as kids sports.  They're located in the colonia, which is just a few minutes walk away.  Sol Foundation offers kids basketball and other activities most nights at the basketball court next to Anthony's Key Resort.  PIER (Partners in Education Roatan) is about a 20 min walk from the hostel, and has a book-mobile, e-learning center and library.  The Roatan Marine Park also takes on volunteers.  Roatan Because We Care organizes several events each year,  including a food drive at Christmas, back to school items for kids in January, and seniors outreaches.  If you like animals, contact Roatan Rescue Renegade, or find out about the World Vet spay/neuter clinics.
Haven't found something that's the right fit for you yet?  You don't have to volunteer with an organization in order to be helpful.  Do a trash pick up on the beach, go play soccer with some kids on the beach, drop by a local school and see if you can assist with helping kids practice their reading.  It doesn't matter your age, level of physical fitness, financial means, schooling or amount of time you're here- there's always some way that you can help out, and giving back feels good!

Mel is a Canadian who's been living in Roatan for 2 decades.  Before being a single mom of 2, she used to travel around the world as a dive instructor.  She looks forward to the opportunity to meet many other travelers in her hostel.
